Legal Support for Expats in the Netherlands

Zuidkamer Advies

Settling into life in the Netherlands is exciting, but navigating the bureaucracy can be daunting. I can help you navigate local regulations, contracts, and paperwork. I provide quick, practical legal advice that cuts through the complexity, whether you’re dealing with a (rental) contract, an employment issue, or simply having to interact formally with domestic institutions and service providers. Whether you're a student finding your feet, a professional starting a new role, or a family adjusting to Dutch life, I’m here to help with the formal side of settling in, so you can focus on what matters.

I offer in-person consultations in Groningen, as well as remote support via phone, email, or video call, whichever works best for your location —all at a reasonable hourly rate that we agree on before we start. Whether you’re just getting started or have been here for years, I’m here to make sure you have the support you need—efficiently and affordably.

What I Do (And What I Don’t Do)

I’m here to help with the everyday legal and bureaucratic challenges that come with living in the Netherlands. Here are some examples of the services I offer:

Rental Agreements

If you're renting an apartment in the Netherlands, it's crucial to understand your rights and obligations as a tenant. From contract reviews to advice on dealing with deposit disputes, I’ll help you make sense of the fine print—and avoid any nasty surprises.

Employment Issues

Whether you're working full-time, part-time, or on a temporary contract, Dutch employment law can be tricky to navigate. I’ll guide you through issues like employment contracts, rights to paid leave, workplace disputes, and more.

Contracts

Understanding the rights and obligations involved in various types of contracts, including services and sales, mitigating in disputes and supporting you in terminating contracts with parties that are a little less willing to let go.

Domestic institutions

Registering with the municipality, applying for a BSN (Dutch social security number), updating your address, applying for parking and/or building permits —you’ll need to interact with local authorities at various points. I can help you understand the process and make sure all your paperwork is in order.

About me

I’m Sanne Boswijk (MA, LL.M), legal adviser and philosopher. I’m an internationally oriented Northerner based in Groningen, the Netherlands, with years of experience as an expat myself. I worked for international organisations in Africa and the Middle East for over a decade and I’m of course also fully qualified in Dutch law. Having resettled back home a few years ago, I retrained in Dutch law and am running this small business while I pursue a degree in Fine Arts.

Note: I am a fully qualified legal adviser but I’m not registered at the bar. This means that I can’t represent you in court in criminal matters or civil matters over 25.000 euros, but it also means I don’t charge like a law firm!
